Clarence Campbell Bowl presentation
[edit]Let's have a discussion on the talk page instead of within edit summaries regarding the presentation of the Clarence Campbell Bowl in the 2021 Stanley Cup semifinals. Originally, the NHL said no trophies would be awarded to the Stanley Cup finalists. On June 10 the league announced the Clarence Campbell Bowl and Prince of Wales Trophy would be awarded to the winners of the Vegas-Montreal series and New York-Tampa Bay series. No mention was made of conference championships, which is understandable since there has been no notion of a conference in the regular season or the playoff structure, which chose the semifinal matchups based on regular season record. If the NHL provides additional info, then appropriate changes can be made then, but as of now, there is no official source awarding the Western Conference championship to anyone this season. isaacl (talk) 22:43, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
- I second what Isaacl is saying (and I also mentioned it at Talk:Clarence S. Campbell Bowl#2021). No conferences in the season or playoffs and no sources saying it was won for a conference championship means it was not a conference championship, period. Unfortunately, as it is only added by IPs, not sure they will see this discussion, which will then lead to the page being locked in the long run. Yosemiter (talk) 22:48, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
- The Clarence Campbell Bowl is awarded to the Western Conference champions. In 2021 it was awarded to the Montreal Canadiens. Therefore, in 2021, the Montreal Canadiens are the "Western Conference" champions. BoopBeepBeepBoop (talk) 12:40, 26 June 2021 (UTC)
- @BoopBeepBeepBoop: Would you like to cite a source that says the "2021 Clarence Campbell Bowl is awarded to the Western Conference Champion" please? There was no Western Conference in 2020–21 and the NHL has not called anything this season a conference. Until there is a WP:V source with that phrase or similar, its not accurate. (Also, it has not always been awarded to the Western Conference, only since 1993; they can award it however they see fit.) Yosemiter (talk) 00:56, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

- Perhaps it could be added with a note stating that it was for a "Semi-Final" rather than a Conference, due to COVID? Because while it's not technically a conference, it is effectively the same thing. Saying a team won a conference championship is a way of saying they won a penultimate round of the playoffs, which the Canadiens did this season.CaptainCanada (talk) 19:51, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
- It's no different than the 1974 through 1981 playoffs, the semifinal winners were not necessarily the conference champions and we don't list those occurrences as "conference champions" on those teams either. Perhaps a note can be added the same way it is for Stanley Cups & Presidents' Trophies, keep the conference championships at 8, but add a note along the lines of:
- In 2021 the NHL temporarily realigned the divisions and playoff format for the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the third round of the playoffs being renamed the semifinals, instead of the conference finals. The Canadiens were awarded the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl for winning their semifinal, but were not awarded a conference championship.

- @Mr. No Funny Nickname: I still disagree with the note. Winning a named trophy has no impact on whether or not the team won a conference championship. A better note would be explaining why the 1980–81 NHL season is considered a conference championship because the Canadiens did NOT make it to the Stanley Cup finals (or even out of the first round). That, or now you need to add a note to every team that won a division of conference championship between 1974 and 1981. I am not sure how it can be "confusing" enough that it needs a note to list what was not conference championship in a season where there is plenty of evidence that there was no conferences. It's not like we are listing every Prince of Wales Trophy win in that parameter (as it has been awarded to the conference champion since 1974), where would then need to note their 17 additional wins of that trophy. - Since 1982, each team that won the third round of the Stanley Cup playoffs was a conference winner, either the Wales, Campbell, Eastern or Western conference, and in doing so was awarded either the Wales or Campbell trophies. 2021 is a temporary one-year anomaly in that no conference title was awarded, which is why I don't think that the number of conference championships should be changed from 8 to 9. However, I feel it is entirely appropriate to place an explanatory note as this is an anomaly and not the first year of a permanent chance such as when conference champions were changed from being recognised for a regular season accomplishment vs. a post-season one.Mr. No Funny Nickname (talk) 21:16, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
Unofficial “new” mascot
[edit]Recently, the Canadiens introduced an unofficial second mascot named METAL! His appearances will be limited to the team’s “Reverse Retro” matches during the 2022-23 season. - We typically use Wikipedia Notability standards (see here WP:GNG) to determine whether or not a topic qualifies to be a standalone article. Doing an (admittingly cursory) search on METAL!, I don't believe he would qualify for a standalone article, given that there as there is no significant and reliable secondary sources on the topic.
- That said, that doesn't stop anyone from expanding the existing mascot section in this existing article to include info about METAL!. Leventio (talk) 18:03, 24 February 2023 (UTC)

I can see that there are a few sections which would benefit from update/tweaking.
Firstly, under the Hall of Fame section, Shea Weber should replace Pierre Turgeon where it reads "was the most recently inducted," with the year updated to "2024". Recipients of the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award should also read a total of "seven broadcasters" with the additions of both Richard Garneau (1999) and Pierre Houde (2024) per List of Montreal Canadiens award winners page.
Next, under First-round draft picks, the word "overall" should be included next to 5th for Ivan Demidov as this is the case for preceding list entries.
