Page move

[edit]

I've moved the page to the most common form of the name used in English per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names) and Wikipedia:Naming_conventions#Spanish_family_names. --Viriditas | Talk 00:10, 18 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Merged

[edit]

I took all the info from the Agustin Barrios-Mangoré article and added to this one. I created a redirect afterwards. Bruno18 04:07, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of works

[edit]

I have added a list of works (pieces and poems) and some other external links. edward, 09:10, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

I have added Vals 4 to the list of his outstanding works since this is invariably included on all albums devoted to his music. ~~ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.69.109.93 (talk) 03:11, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Listening to different recordings, I found four Barrios works under different titles: London Carape = Danza Paraguaya; Aconquija = Vals Op.8 No.3; Madrigal = Choro de Saudade; Jha Che Valle = Un Sueno en la Floresta Graeff (talk) 18:48, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Williams quote

[edit]

I took out one sentence that qualified Williams' assessment of Barrios and Giuliani/Sor, because it's Williams' opinion; we don't have to subject it to NPOV scrutiny, as if it were an entry by a contributor.

However, just out of interest, can anyone explain what Williams meant when he said "regardless of ear"? It's always puzzled me.

Typo? - era? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.157.213.136 (talk) 14:30, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have also removed an unsourced claim that Williams, "perpetuated the myth" of Barrios having made the first classical guitar gramophone recordings, which does not seem justified. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:48, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Mangore.jpg

[edit]

Image:Mangore.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 03:30, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Composer project review

[edit]

I've reviewed this article as part of the Composers project review of its B-class articles. This is a Start-class article; the biography is too sketchy too support a B rating. My full review is on the comments page; questions and comments should be left here or on my talk page. Magic♪piano 17:16, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Banknote

;Composers Project Assessment of Agustín Barrios: 2024-11-4

This is an assessment of article Agustín Barrios by a member of the Composers project, according to its assessment criteria. This review was done by Magicpiano.

If an article is well-cited, the reviewer is assuming that the article reflects reasonably current scholarship, and deficiencies in the historical record that are documented in a particular area will be appropriately scored. If insufficient inline citations are present, the reviewer will assume that deficiencies in that area may be cured, and that area may be scored down.

Adherence to overall Wikipedia standards (WP:MOS, WP:WIAGA, WP:WIAFA) are the reviewer's opinion, and are not a substitute for the Wikipedia's processes for awarding Good Article or Featured Article status.

Origins/family background/studies

Does the article reflect what is known about the composer's background and childhood? If s/he received musical training as a child, who from, is the experience and nature of the early teachers' influences described?

  • More could be said, if known, about his childhood.
Early career

Does the article indicate when s/he started composing, discuss early style, success/failure? Are other pedagogic and personal influences from this time on his/her music discussed?

  • Biographically sketchy; material on composing and performing needs organization.
Mature career

Does the article discuss his/her adult life and composition history? Are other pedagogic and personal influences from this time on his/her music discussed?

  • Biographically sketchy; material on composing and performing needs organization.
List(s) of works

Are lists of the composer's works in WP, linked from this article? If there are special catalogs (e.g. Köchel for Mozart, Hoboken for Haydn), are they used? If the composer has written more than 20-30 works, any exhaustive listing should be placed in a separate article.

  • Partial listing; a full list of known works should be provided in a separate article, as should a list of his writings.
Critical appreciation

Does the article discuss his/her style, reception by critics and the public (both during his/her life, and over time)?

  • Style and influence is discussed; critical and popular reception are sketchy.
Illustrations and sound clips

Does the article contain images of its subject, birthplace, gravesite or other memorials, important residences, manuscript pages, museums, etc? Does it contain samples of the composer's work (as composer and/or performer, if appropriate)? (Note that since many 20th-century works are copyrighted, it may not be possible to acquire more than brief fair use samples of those works, but efforts should be made to do so.) If an article is of high enough quality, do its images and media comply with image use policy and non-free content policy? (Adherence to these is needed for Good Article or Featured Article consideration, and is apparently a common reason for nominations being quick-failed.)

  • One image; no sound clips.
References, sources and bibliography

Does the article contain a suitable number of references? Does it contain sufficient inline citations? (For an article to pass Good Article nomination, every paragraph possibly excepting those in the lead, and every direct quotation, should have at least one footnote.) If appropriate, does it include Further Reading or Bibliography beyond the cited references?

  • Article has a "Bibliography"; unclear if these works were used to develop the article; some inline citations.
Structure and compliance with WP:MOS

Does the article comply with Wikipedia style and layout guidelines, especially WP:MOS, WP:LEAD, WP:LAYOUT, and possibly WP:SIZE? (Article length is not generally significant, although Featured Articles Candidates may be questioned for excessive length.)

  • Probably-mislabeled "Bibliography"; parenthetical diversions that should be in footnotes (or not in lead); material needs copyediting for language and voice.
Things that may be necessary to pass a Good Article review
  • Biography is too sketchy; needs expansion (other things may be needed too, but this is fatal)
Summary

This guy sounds interesting; I wish more of his story was told here. The biographical details of his adult life are extremely sketchy; we know he toured, but there are no details. We have no personal details; did he ever marry? Considering a dedicated English-language biography exists (listed in the probably mis-labeled "Bibliography" section), I find this lack of detail troubling. (At a minimum, if details are in fact unavailable, this fact should be explicitly mentioned and cited.)

Article is Start-class; biography is too sketchy. Magic♪piano 17:14, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

There are more very good images at barriosworldwide.com. Are these all now copyright free because of their age? The full colour image, third down, in the section "Inseparable... Barrios and the Guitar. Part 3" is particularly striking. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:53, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
